While our first choice for a tablet is the full sized iPad, we also think there many architects who would appreciate the smaller form factor and cheaper price of the Google Nexus 7 tablet. The Nexus 7 is one of the primary competitors to the Apple iPad Mini and the Amazon Kindle. It is much smaller and lighter than 10" tablets so it will be more comfortable for those long trips - it is also more comfortable for typing with thumbs.
If the recipient of this gift is a Google Android fan, this is the tablet for them. It comes with Android Jelly Bean and will receive future updates direct from Google.
The biggest advantage of the Nexus 7 - its size - is also its biggest drawback. If your architect wants to spend time drawing on their tablet or looking at drawings from the office, a larger tablet like the iPad Retina or the Nexus 10 should be on your shopping list. In addition, the Nexus 7 doesn't have a rear facing camera so it isn't the best tablet for using in the field for site reports or punch lists. However, if the primary use for the device is for reading books, surfing the internet, or taking meeting notes then we think the Nexus 7 is the right tablet for you.
