Urbanized is a documentary by Gary Hustwit, who also directed another one of our favorites, Helvetica DVD. This documentary is about cities and how they are designed. There are many interviews with architects, urban designers, city planners, and policy makers. Some of the most well known city shapers make appearances, including Rem Koolhaas, Sir Norman Foster, Bruce Katz, Oscar Niemeyer, and Ellen Dunham-Jones.
In order to provide a solid understanding of who shapes our cities and how they do it, the documentary focuses on a dozen projects in cities around the world. Some of the projects are huge infrastructure undertakings and others are simply temporary interventions that still have dramatic effects on the city. Watch well over two hours of fascinating conversations about the future of the modern city.
Some of the important themes covered are transportation, security and safety, urban sprawl, social issues, and environmental issues. These (and more) are the important issues of our time. All designers and architects should study the city and how it is designed and built. This DVD is the perfect entry into urbanism for a student or a great continuation of the conversation for an experienced architect.
